The first thing Claire noticed was that her son didn't look out of the window anymore.
It sounds like nothing. It is nothing. Children fidget, children change, children go through phases. But Thomas had spent the entire journey to the launch site with his face pressed against the car window, watching everything — pylons, fields, a fox frozen at the roadside, a lorry painted with a mural he wanted to discuss for twenty minutes. He was eight years old and the world was inexhaustible to him.
He came back fourteen months later and sat in the same seat on the same journey and looked at his hands.
She told herself it was the adjustment. Fourteen months was a long time. He'd been part of the first children's cohort on the colony — a research programme, controlled, monitored, the opportunity of a lifetime, a lottery they'd entered half-joking and won. He'd been well cared for. The reports had been good. He just needed time.
But the window. That was the thing she kept coming back to. Her son who had once made her pull over to watch a bird of prey circling above a motorway bridge — that boy looked at his hands.
There were forty-three children in the cohort. Ages seven to twelve. Fourteen months on the colony, supervised by researchers and educators, a rigorous programme of learning and stimulation. By any measurable standard the programme had been a success.
The parents noticed things that weren't in the reports.
At the first reunion, three weeks after return, they found themselves talking in the corner of a room while their children sat in the centre. Not playing. Not talking. Sitting with the particular stillness of people waiting for something.
"He doesn't finish things," said one father. His son had been building model aircraft since he was five. Complex ones — Spitfires, Lancasters, hours of focused work. He'd started three since coming back. Abandoned each within minutes. "He starts. Gets bored. Moves to the next thing. He used to spend four hours on a single wing."
"Mine doesn't read anymore," said a mother. "She read everything. She was halfway through Narnia when she left. The book is exactly where she put it."
"Mine can't sit at dinner."
"Mine gets angry. Not — not badly. Just this flash of frustration when things don't happen immediately. Like waiting is physically painful."
They looked at their children sitting in the centre of the room.
"They look fine," someone said.
"They look exactly fine," someone else agreed. And that was the strange part. They weren't unhappy. They weren't distressed. They were just — elsewhere. Present in body. Absent in some other way that didn't have a clean name.
Dr. Miriam Okafor ran the developmental assessment programme that followed the cohort home. She had expected adjustment issues — any fourteen-month separation produces them. She had not expected what she found.

And their relationship with boredom had fundamentally changed. That capacity was gone. Boredom now produced only agitation. An itch with no name that demanded immediate scratching.

It was a junior researcher who found it.
She'd been reviewing the colony logs — fourteen months of daily records, activities, schedules, nutrition, sleep. Everything accounted for, everything normal. She was looking for something environmental, something physical. She almost missed it because it was so thoroughly unremarkable.
Every child in the cohort had been given a personal device on arrival. Standard. Expected. Educational tools, communication with home, entertainment during downtime. The devices were — the logs noted this without emphasis — used extensively. An average of six hours per day. Some days more.
She pulled the usage data. The applications. The patterns.
Then she sat with it for a long time before she called Dr. Okafor.
Miriam looked at the data for three days before she could write the sentence plainly.
We sent children to an extraordinary environment and gave them devices engineered to be more compelling than any environment.
For fourteen months, during a critical developmental window, their primary relationship was not with Mars. It was with a screen.
Mars — with its rust-coloured sky, its crushing silences, its strange low gravity, its two moons rising — sat outside the window. They looked at their hands.
The devices were not unusual. The applications were not unusual. Every child in the cohort had the same apps their friends at home had. The same feeds. The same games. The same variable reward loops, the same infinite scrolls, the same algorithmically curated streams of stimulation calibrated to produce maximum engagement.
The same things, in other words, that children at home were using.
The difference was what they'd been taken away from.
At home, the device competes with: school, friends, family mealtimes, the walk to the corner shop, a Saturday morning with nothing to do. The device is one thing among many. Compelling, certainly. Dominant, often. But surrounded.
On Mars, the device competed with: a research station. Corridors. Airlocks. Adults doing work. The same forty children in the same pressurised space for fourteen months.
The device won completely.
And a developing brain given one source of stimulation for fourteen months at the precise age when it is building its fundamental architecture — its attention systems, its empathy circuits, its capacity for sustained thought — builds itself around that source.
We didn't study what Mars does to children

The answer is: this. Exactly this.
And the children at home — the ones who never went anywhere — are getting the same dose. More slowly. But the same dose.
We just sent a cohort to a place where we could measure it.

She sat with it at the kitchen table and then she went upstairs to where he was — sitting on his bed, device in hand, the window behind him showing the garden in late afternoon light, a blackbird on the fence that he didn't see.
She stood in the doorway for a moment.
He looked up. Smiled. Her son, completely. Still completely her son.
"Come downstairs," she said. "Leave that up here."
He looked at the device. Then at her. She saw the small negotiation happen in his face — the pull, the resistance, the decision.
He put it face-down on the bed.
He came downstairs.
They sat in the garden and watched the blackbird, and after a while he started talking — about Mars, about things he'd seen, about the sky there, about things he'd been meaning to tell her for months — and she thought:
there he is. There's the window boy.
He hadn't gone anywhere.
He'd just been somewhere else.
The forty-three children in this story don't exist.
But the research does.
