Try one day to find out what you need to prepare. Try one week away from one app or feed to see what changes. Try two weeks only if you want to test a bigger change, such as blocking mobile internet. Keep any tools you need for work, family, health or safety.
First, Decide What You Are Taking a Break From
You might stop social media, mobile internet, news after dinner or work messages at night. Choose the thing before you choose the number of days. One week away from one feed is very different from one week without a phone.
Write down what you will stop, what you will keep and when the break will end.
Try One Day If This Is Your First Detox
One day shows you where the problems are. You may find that you need maps, tickets, banking, medical access or a way for someone to reach you. You will also see when your hand reaches for the phone without thinking.
Use the one-day digital detox plan. If the day teaches you something useful, you can try a longer and more focused break next.
Try One Week to Test Life Without One App or Feed
A 2022 study asked 154 adults to stop using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok for one week. At the end of the week, that group reported better wellbeing and lower depression and anxiety than the group that kept using the platforms.
That does not make seven days the perfect answer. It does show that one week is long enough to test a clear change.

Try Two Weeks for a Bigger Change
A 2025 study blocked mobile internet on people's phones for two weeks. Calls and texts still worked. Internet on computers still worked. The group reported better mental health and wellbeing, and their attention improved.
But the plan was hard to follow. Of 467 people who agreed to do it, only 119 followed it closely enough for the study's main test. Two weeks can be useful, but it is not easy or required.

What the Research Says About the “Perfect” Length
There is no proven best length. A 2023 review looked at 23 studies. The breaks lasted from one day to four weeks, but the results were mixed and most studies were weak. A 2025 review of ten studies also found no clear overall benefit from taking a break from social media.
Another 2025 paper suggested that about three weeks may work best. The researchers said more studies are needed. So three weeks is an idea to test, not a rule.

My 21-Day Plan Lasted 12 Days
I planned to take 21 days away. My written diary ended on Day 12. That still taught me a great deal. You can watch the film in the free course and read what I wrote each day.
You do not need to finish a heroic challenge to learn something. Choose a break you can actually do.
Choose Your Length Now
Start with one day if you are unsure. Choose one week if you want to test life without one app or type of media. Choose two weeks only if the bigger break answers a clear question.
Before the break ends, decide what will come back and what rules it will have. If you keep bingeing or cannot stop, try free MAA or ITAA meetings instead of making the private challenge longer.
Quick Answers

Keep the access you need. Take a break from something narrower, such as social media, news or optional browsing.
Is 21 days the best length for a digital detox?
