Look at what is happening in your life. Are you losing sleep? Missing work? Fighting with people? Using your phone while driving? Trying to stop and failing? These signs matter more than a screen-time number.
1. You Keep Going After You Meant to Stop
A ten-minute check becomes an hour. One episode becomes three. You delete an app, put it back and use it the same way. If this keeps happening, your current rules are not working.
Write down the exact pattern. For example: “I opened short videos after dinner four nights this week. Each time, I stayed for about an hour.” A clear pattern is easier to change than “I use technology too much.”
2. Screens Are Hurting Your Sleep or Work
You stay online past bedtime. You wake up and start checking. Messages break your focus. Deadlines slip. Meals, exercise or basic care keep getting pushed aside.
These are real costs. You do not need a perfect screen-time number before you act.
3. Your Relationships Are Suffering
People have to fight your phone for your attention. The same arguments keep coming back. You hide how long you were online because you know it will cause a fight.
Privacy is normal. The warning sign is a repeated pattern that is hurting trust or time together.
4. The Internet Is Pushing Out the Rest of Your Life
Games, videos, group chats and online work can be useful and fun. The problem starts when they keep replacing sleep, movement, hobbies, work or people you still care about.
Do not remove technology you need for work, health, disability access or family. Start with the part that keeps taking more than you meant to give it.
5. You Use Your Phone While Driving
This is not a habit to track later. Stop now. Ask a passenger to handle the phone or park before you touch it.

Do You Need a Digital Detox or More Help?
Try a short digital detox if the problem feels mild and you can keep the plan. Get more help if you keep bingeing, cannot stop or keep going despite serious harm.
What These Signs Can Tell You
These signs can show that something needs to change. They cannot tell you which diagnosis you have.
The World Health Organization has an official diagnosis for gaming disorder. It covers gaming that causes serious problems in daily life. It does not cover every kind of phone, internet, social-media, streaming, news or work use.

Quick Answers
How many signs mean I need a digital detox?
There is no magic number. One serious problem can be enough reason to act.
Does feeling anxious without my phone mean I am addicted?
Not by itself. It may be a habit, a real need for the phone or another problem. Look at whether you can stop and what the use is doing to your life.
When should I get help instead of doing a detox alone?
Get help when you keep trying to stop and cannot, or when your use is causing serious harm.
