I just got off a five-hour checking binge.
Email. Facebook. Amazon. Text messages. WhatsApp. Book reviews. Other reviews. Comments. Email again. A film. Information about the film. Text messages. Facebook. Email. Back to the film.
I truly don't know what I'm looking for.
But I'm looking for something.
Each platform is like a new game on the slot machine. I could win something: a new message, a reply, a fun film, news, anything.
Waiting for a reply creates unbearable tension. Did they respond? What did they say?
The only relief is to check. And check. And check again.
Until I unplug.
And all of a sudden, it is like being inside a dark room all day and then walking outside into the sun.
